Why Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Left Pakistan

In 2010, Javed Ahmad Ghamidi left Pakistan after facing serious threats from extremist groups. His critical stance against religious extremism and terrorism made him a target for those intolerant of his progressive ideas.

1. Threats from Extremists

In a 2015 interview with Voice of America, Ghamidi confirmed that he had received death threats from extremist organizations who opposed his reformist interpretations of Islam.

2. Safety Concerns for Others

He mentioned that he left primarily to protect not only himself but also his neighbors and associates, who feared for their safety. They even urged him to avoid public gatherings and local mosques.

3. Dissent Against Religious Extremism

Ghamidi’s consistent opposition to militant ideologies and rigid religious interpretations made him a symbol of intellectual freedom. However, it also made Pakistan unsafe for him to continue his work.

4. Lack of Freedom of Expression

He found it increasingly difficult to express his views freely in Pakistan due to the rise of intolerance. Moving abroad, particularly to the United States, allowed him to continue his scholarly and educational work without fear.

5. Opposition to His Intellectual Approach

Ghamidi’s rational, evidence-based understanding of Islam clashed with traditionalist circles. His emphasis on logic and Quranic reasoning led him to seek an environment that welcomed intellectual debate rather than hostility.

Founding of Al-Mawrid and Danish Sara

Ghamidi is the founder of Al-Mawrid Institute of Islamic Sciences, an independent research foundation promoting a rational and evidence-based understanding of Islam. He also established Danish Sara, a sister organization focused on educational outreach and spiritual growth.

Currently, he leads the Ghamidi Center of Islamic Learning (CIL) in the United States, serving as Principal Research Fellow and Chief Patron.
